Planning Committee Discusses Stakeholders' Table Meeting & Grassroots Partnerships in Regent Park

 The Regent Park Social Development Plan (SDP) Network Planning Committee met on May 14 to advance its social development agenda. Facilitated by Tamanna Yeasmin, the productive session focused on immediate community recruitment, strategic grassroots partnerships, and expanding global recognition.

The meeting kicked off with a major strategy session for the upcoming Stakeholder Table meeting. Addressing new recruitment  across its four main working groups—Community Building, Safety, Employment and Economic Development (EED), and Communications—the committee decided to pivot the upcoming event into a effective community recruitment drive.

To maximize neighbourhood engagement, the team brainstormed several interactive components. The event will officially launch the Network’s new website and WhatsApp channels, alongside the distribution of printed brochures and copies of Catch Da Flava magazine. To keep the atmosphere lively and educational, neighbours can participate in an SDP-themed Jeopardy game and a "passport" activity suggested by Deany Peters, where attendees collect stamps and snacks at different working group tables.
While the committee acknowledged that food and fun historically draw a crowd, a major portion of the debate centred on converting passive attendees into long-term, active members. To ensure a lasting impact, Adonis Huggins clarified that filling out or updating a formal membership form—specifying housing residency type and working group interests—will be a mandatory requirement at the door, helping the communications team build an actionable database for post-event follow-up.

The committee then shifted focus to strengthening the capacity of its individual working groups:
Employment and Economic Development (EED): Adonis recommended a strategic collaboration between the EED and a local grassroots organization, the Financial Literacy & Entrepreneurial Society Hub (F.L.E.S.H.). Both share identical goals of removing economic barriers for residents. The committee recommended formally presenting this proposal to the EED group to combine resources and build upon past successes like vendor markets and pop cafes.

Community Building: To address structural vacancies, committee member Levi officially agreed to step up as the new co-chair. To secure dedicated organizational anchoring, Adonis shared ongoing talks with ArtHubs (managers of Daniels Spectrum) to explore partnership opportunities to tackle the current capacity issues.

In an exciting update, Adonis informed the committee that the United Nations Urban Pavilion, located right in Regent Park, is looking to highlight the neighbourhood as a global model for sustainable, mixed-income redevelopment. Recognizing the City of Toronto’s SDP as a groundbreaking initiative for social cohesion and inclusion, the committee decided to extend an invitation to UN Pavilion representatives to explore future synergies at an upcoming planning committee  meeting.

Miguel is a long-time resident of Regent Park area. He is also a member of the Regent Park Neighborhood Association, the Coalition for Community Benefits, and the Tenant Representative for 220 Oak St, a Toronto Community Housing building.
