Changing Cultures of Regent Park 2024
In a groundbreaking collaboration between Urban Studies students at
the University of Toronto and the FOCUS Media Arts Centre in Regent
Park, a series of innovative projects has emerged, shedding light on the
dynamic history, ongoing redevelopment, and the diverse lived
experiences within this Toronto neighbourhood.
Initiated in 2019, this collaborative venture aims to bridge the gap between academia and community knowledge, challenging established norms and amplifying voices often marginalized in traditional educational settings. The culmination of this year's efforts has resulted in a remarkable array of final projects, each offering a unique lens into the fabric of Regent Park's community.
"Hey Lady You Matter" is a multimedia intervention focusing on mental health struggles and resources for women in Regent Park, aiming to de-stigmatize conversations around mental wellness.
"Off the Shelf" presents a Regent Park food directory and map, highlighting the stories of five new ethnic businesses, and showcasing the vibrant culinary landscape of the neighbourhood.
"RE-VISIT" takes an innovative approach, offering a board game designed to educate players about community development and the rich history of places within Regent Park.
"SDP Champions" is a documentary amplifying the diverse voices involved in the Social Development Plan, shedding light on both inclusionary successes and areas needing improvement.
"Seasoning Stories" takes a culinary journey, sharing immigration stories to Regent Park through a cookbook filled with meaningful recipes.
Finally, "The Green Committee" offers a digital atlas portraying the past, present, and future green spaces of Regent Park, highlighting the importance of environmental sustainability within the community.
These projects not only showcase the creativity and dedication of the students and residents involved but also serve as powerful tools for community empowerment and education. By centring the narratives and experiences of those living and working in Regent Park, this collaboration demonstrates the potential for meaningful change when academia and community come together in partnership.
