Eid Celebration Unites Regent Park in Diversity and Joy

 In Regent Park, the vibrant spirit of Eid permeated the atmosphere as residents gathered to commemorate the conclusion of Ramadan. Rabia Alsabaie, the founder of the Happy Mom Happy Children's Group and a beloved member of the community, orchestrated a jubilant Eid event at the Daniels Spectrum building. From a lively photobooth to intricate henna designs and handmade Eid cards, every aspect of the celebration radiated the essence of togetherness and festivity that characterizes this special occasion.

Regent Park TV reporter Fred Alvarado had the opportunity to interview Rabia to gain deeper insights into the significance of the event. "Eid Mubarak to everyone celebrating Eid. I hope this month's festivities bring blessings, peace, and joy to our entire community," Rabia expressed. "Today, we mark the end of Ramadan after 30 days of fasting. Our event features various activities, including meet and greets, a toy drive organized by Healing As One, complimentary refreshments, and engaging stations for children, such as face-painting and the photobooth. The happiness and excitement on people's faces are truly palpable. As the Happy Mom, Happy Children Group, our aim is to spread joy and happiness among mothers and children in our community."




Ramadan holds profound significance for Muslims worldwide, symbolizing spiritual renewal, reflection, and solidarity. In Regent Park, where a significant number of Muslim residents observe Ramadan, these celebrations underscore the community's unwavering commitment to diversity and inclusivity. By uniting to honor and uphold each other's traditions, residents forge stronger bonds and cultivate a deep sense of belonging and mutual respect.

Community-based policing is a proactive law enforcement strategy that focuses on building ties and working closely with a community’s members to create partnerships and plans for preventing and reducing crime. While community policing will look differently depending on the community it serves, a central feature is that the same officer patrols and works in the same area on a permanent basis. Currently there are 17 community-based police programs in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), but what most people don’t know is that Toronto’s community policing started in Regent Park in May of 2017. We know this because the original officers involved in setting up the Regent Park community policing program continue to work here today. I had moved into Regent Park only a few days before I saw the pink, fuchsia, strawberry, indigo, yellow, green, neck streamers and sparkling robes worn by children, parents, aunts, uncles, and elders as they marched passed my kitchen door. Soon, the nearby Athletic Grounds was blazing with colour. Although it was the first time I heard them, the intonations on the microphone were recognizable, even to me, as prayers. It was Eid, the concluding celebration after Ramadan. It was a beautiful sight.
